Wolfram|Alpha: It’s a ‘Knowlegde’ Engine

Wat will u do if u want to know about the population of Galesburb, Illinois? or about calories in 2gm of sugar? or about the date of birth of albert einstein?

You will Google it!!

Since its launch in 1996, google has revolutionized Search Engines and today has become the synonym for ‘search’

But things might change soon! very soon!!

The monopoly of google is as a search engine is at stakes. A new search engine (actaully a ‘knowledge’ engine)- Wolfram|Alpfha (www.wolphramalpha.com) is giving jitters to google

Try this!

Visit wolframalpha.com and google.com and search for “lim(x->0) x/sin x”. Unlike google which will provide you a list of lakhs and crores of websites (majority of which are useless), WolframAlpha will yield the answer 1.

To sense the magic of WA (Wolfram Alpha), try out things like “gdp of india” or “distance between delhi and rohtak”

Launched on 18th May, WA is still an infant and may not provide u information about every topic (it cant even recognize the word ‘cricket’!!) but as its homepage read “Today’s Wolfram|Alpha is the first step in an ambitious, long-term project to make all systematic knowledge immediately computable by anyone.”

Try and get the answer of questions mentioned in the beginning (the word ‘beginning’ is the 903rd most written word in English, source:WA) of the post through google as well as through WA and you will get to know that why u shud feel pity for google! But dont be!!!

Google is not a giant sleeper. Dont be surprized if u get a more sophisticated and thorough ‘knowledge’ engine from GOOGLE!

Yesterday only, Microsoft has also announced its new search engine (‘decision’ engine): Bing(www.bing.com)
